On 25 October, Skoobs Books at Montecasino was the place to be as the last three schools battled to make it to the High School Book Quiz: Bragging Writes finals.
Hosted by Skoobs Theatre of Books store manager Kirsten Rolston, the competition encourages and pushes high school learners to read as many books as possible.
Quizmaster of the ceremony was Scandal actress Natasha Sutherland, who made the quiz fun by joking around and giving the learners very subtle clues.
Rolston, who also created the quiz, said, “This started in February, it was actually because Reddam House came and visited Skoobs a couple of times and we talked about books with the Grade 9s and 11s while giving them a tour of the store. Then I said I’ll do a little quiz for them and they enjoyed it so much that I thought about having the other schools join which were Fourways High, Steyn City, Brescia and HeronBridge.”
The quiz was divided into two rounds with each round having three divisions. The first round’s questions were based on was classic and contemporary books, books that have been made into movies and books from the Wizarding World. In the second round, learners had to identify excerpts, graphics and illustrations from books and answer general book-related questions.
Cheered on by their parents and school teachers, HeronBridge College came out number one in the first round. In the second round, Brescia House School came in third place which kicked them out of the competition making Reddam Helderfontein and leading school HeronBridge College the top two finalists in the competition.
Rolston added, “Monte is giving us prices, restaurants, movie tickets, prizes from Disney, publishers will be giving some books and so there will be quite a selection of prizes.”
The date for the final quiz has not yet been confirmed.
