Miguel de Waal is back on track at motocross nationals

NORTHERN FARM – It's back to MX podiums for Miguel de Waal after he broke his shoulder, wrist and foot in three separate incidents starting at the beginning of the season.

Broadacres motor racer, Miguel de Waal has overcome injury to earn podium finishes at the last two South African Motocross National races.

The 16-year-old, who trains at Terra Topia in Northern Farm, broke his shoulder, wrist and foot in three separate incidents starting at the beginning of the season.

Miguel recently returned to racing and finished second in Pietermaritzburg in August and third in Welkom in September, at the 125cc races.

He is in form and has his eyes on the final leg of nationals, which will be held at Terra Topia on 26 October.

“It was a bit of an unfortunate start to the season but it is part of the sport really,” Miguel told the Fourways Review between practice sessions.

“I hope to end the season well with a podium or possibly a win because it is my home track,”

The young racer preferred to remain positive and focus on what he can control, and that is how well he rides on the dirt track.

“I have always had a passion for bikes, I started a little bit later than anyone else [at the age of 11]. I love the thrill, the friends you get to meet, the fun times.”

In November he aims to compete at the Mini ‘Os in Florida, USA for the first time. While moto racing is not an Olympic sport, this event is treated by its participants as one of the most prestigious competitions in the world.

“I am super excited and nervous about the event. I have always dreamed of this event and it is something I have always wanted to do.”

In order to participate, Miguel has to raise funds for travel, accommodation and entrance fees.

A comedy evening will be held for fundraising at Parker’s Comedy and Jive, Montecasino, on 12 November.

Tickets are R350 each and there will be a raffle draw and spot prizes.
