Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) released their Victims of Crime 2018/2019 report on Thursday, 3 October. The highest reported incidents were housebreaking, vehicle theft and robberies.
The report found that there were about 1,3 million incidences of housebreaking affecting 5,8 per cent of households in South Africa.
Likely victims of housebreaking were male-headed households, households in metros, Indian/Asian households followed by white households, very low and very high-income households, and households in Northern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The number of incidents reported to the police was just at 48 per cent.

In Gauteng, approximately 53 000 housebreakings were reported to the police, wherein the previous year 2017/2018 approximately 56 000 were reported.
The number of people who experienced street robbery or common robbery, when there is contact between the perpetrator or perpetrators and the victim away from home, amounted to 581 4378 cases. Gauteng accounted for approximately 200 000 of that total.
The total amount of incidents of hijacking was 32 465, in Gauteng, the number had decreased from 8 977 to 8 423. The percentage of hijackings or truck jacking decreased in the province by 6.17 per cent.
Fewer South Africans feel safe walking home in the dark and the Stats SA report correlates this. The report found that people feel safer walking in their neighbourhood during the day. The number increased from 79,1 per cent in 2017/2018 to 82,8 per cent in 2018/19 while only 35,1 per cent felt safe walking alone at night.
