Celebs throw down for charity

JOHANNESBURG – The three celebs – one a seasoned celebrity chef, one a comedic and DIY queen and the other a South African rap giant – created their own limited-edition square-shaped pizzas that will be available at all Col'Cacchio restaurants in the country.

Everyone loves pizza and good old competition, even better when all of this is done in the name of charity.

Famous for its artisanal wood-fired pizza, homey feel and delicious Italian inspired dishes, Dainfern Square’s Col’cacchio teamed up with Lorna Maseko, SuzelleDIY, and Kwesta for the Celebrity Chef Showdown.

Taking place on 26 September, it was an amazing evening of high stakes, big hearts, and delectable pizza, as the celebs played their best culinary hands to help raise much-needed funds for the Children’s Hospital Trust, on behalf of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Col’Cacchio co-founder, Kinga Baranowska said, “We’ve been doing this for years now and it has helped us donate quite a sizeable amount to the Red Cross Children Hospital. This event, from year to year, has grown from strength to strength.”

The three celebs – one a seasoned celebrity chef, one a comedic and DIY queen and the other a South African rap giant – created their own limited-edition square-shaped pizzas that will be available at all Col’Cacchio restaurants in the country.

Aptly named Lorna’s D’lite, Maseko’s pizza is a healthy and vegetarian-friendly choice laced with a tomato base, mozzarella, chicken, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, pickled jalapeno, and avocado and served with a light salad.

“I wanted to get involved because it supports a really good cause and the Red Cross Children’s Hospital has been around for years. They have beautiful success stories of what they do for communities and it’s just absolutely amazing,” said foodie and celebrity chef, Maseko.

Known for her humour, quick DIY hacks and colourful personality, Suzelle said she was excited to get involved with the initiative and added a personal touch to her pizza – straight from her new recipe book.

“If each and every person can do just a small thing to help the people around them that would make a difference,” Suzelle said.

Pulling out a secret weapon in the form of his adorable daughter, Khai, the ingredients on Kwesta’s pizza, Kwesta Dakhai, were selected by his daughter. With the help of her dad, Khai selected a tomato base, mozzarella, green peppers, onions, Russians, pepperoni and more for the meaty delight.

“She likes pizza and as soon as I told her that I would be doing some interesting stuff that involves pizza and charity she wanted to be a part of it. She chose a lot of the ingredients,” Kwesta said.

Although there was no official winner at the showdown, proceeds made from the sales of each of the celeb’s pizzas are set to go towards the Children’s Hospital Trust.
