Joburg Water repairs water pipes at Talevera Estate

FOURWAYS – Joburg Water has had several setbacks in completing Talavera Estate's damaged joints.

Damaged water joints at Talavera Estate have caused major water outages in Fourways and surrounding areas for weeks, Johannesburg Water began the process of repairing the damaged joints on 4 August.

Joburg Water said on Twitter that Talavera’s joints had leaked and a team had been sent out to fix the problem. The tweet read, “Johannesburg Water has isolated the main as a result of the leak at the joint that was repaired last night. It will take some time to drain the main before the repairs can commence.”

During the repairs, parts of Fourways such as Cedar Lakes had no water, the first step of repairs was draining the excavation.

The team then proceed to open the bolts and repair the damaged joints, “We are in the process of making the site safe as the water from the leak saturated the ground.”

At the time they estimated the work to be completed by 10pm on 4 August, however, the repair team had to open the 600mm main again due to another leak at one of the joints during the recharging of the line “We will need to drain the main before the repairs can commence.”

During the repair process, water tanks have been made available at Chartwell, Cedar Lakes and Broadacres as parts of Fourways has had no water for days.

The repair completion was first expected to be completed within one day but due to the wrong size pipes, estimated time for completion has been extended but no time period has been given. “Due to the inconsistency of the outside diameters of the steel and AC section of the pipes, the fittings need to be taken back to the factories to adjust the tolerances on the fittings to ensure the fittings fit properly to eliminate failures of the past three days,” Joburg Water added.

The resized fittings were delivered on-site, J0burg Water apologised for the continuous water outage and are working on restoring water.
