Farmall residents unhappy with Pikitup’s services

FARMALL – Residents of Farmall Watercombe Street have said that they are experiencing waste removal challenges with Pickitup.

A number of residents from Fourways Farmall aren’t satisfied with the waste collection company, Pikitup because, according to them, Pikitup hasn’t been consistent in collecting dustbins on Watercombe Road.

According to Ward 96 councillor Sbusiso Mthembu, the issue has been going on for a while. “It’s very disappointing, and a month doesn’t go by without residents of that street notifying me that Pikitup hasn’t come to collect,” he revealed.

“I might not be aware of the challenges they face on the ground, but I believe this is their job on a daily [basis] and it’s confusing that it keeps happening over and over again.

“I must say, out of all the other entities, I’ve got a huge challenge with Pikitup. Yes, I do escalate matters to the relevant people but I can’t keep reminding them, these are daily routines.”

A resident of Farmall, Hugo Werner echoed the councillor’s sentiments.

“It’s been going on for a while now, especially on Watercombe Street. They only collect every second week and now, at times, we have dustbins standing outside for a week and it’s just inconvenient and very unhealthy,” he said.

Pikitup operations manager Majoro Letsela confirmed, “We are aware of the situation, the councillor has brought it to our attention.

“Remember, we make more than 10 000 collections daily and in Farmall, we have a truck that goes there on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.”

Letsela clarified, “The problem with Farmall is the road. There is a lot of dust there and we rotate workers that go collect there and another problem is that residents do not take out their bins on time which is 7am. Now, I also want to make it clear that we do not operate on machines, these are trucks and we might experience mechanical challenges along the way.”

The operation manager further urged residents to communicate with them, “Some residents will renew their houses – this might be in a form of painting or replacing old tiles – now, when our guys are on duty on the day of collection, they find the waste removal bag filled with tiles and other building materials.

“We are not saying people shouldn’t renovate or anything but communicate with us beforehand. Another challenge is that one will host an event and on the day of collection, we find one household sitting with more than 10 waste removal bags. We are not saying that is wrong but arrange with us so that we can work effectively.”
