Police have confirmed that they have located and arrested the owner of the minibus taxi who allegedly threw a hammer at a motorist on William Nicol Drive.
The Fourways Review reported on the initial incident where a motorist filmed alleged unlawful driving from the taxi driver in Fourways in the article Police hunt for ‘hammer’ taxi driver [Week ending 12 July]. The much-circulated video, which surfaced on 3 July, further showed the taxi driver throwing what looked like a hammer at the motorist. Douglasdale Police Station has arrested the suspect accused of attacking the motorist.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele has confirmed that the suspect had been arrested, “The suspect has been on the run ever since the incident took place, but we can now reveal that we have managed to arrest him. The suspect is a 36-year-old male and he assaulted a 67-year-old man with a hammer along William Nicol Drive.”
The suspect has been charged with assault and malicious damage to property.
He is expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on assault charges.
MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said that they will ensure that the process of the law is followed thoroughly.
“We are very happy to have made this arrest and now we will make sure that the law takes its course,” Sun said.
“I have also met with the victim and he was badly injured. The City has offered him assistance in the best way possible,” he said.
