SA’s top hits the grass

DAINFERN – Tennis Inc and Dainfern Tennis club turned Dainfern soccer field into a mini Wimbledon-themed grass tennis court as tennis players had a fun time on the court.

Tennis Inc and Dainfern Tennis Club recently held a Wimbledon-themed grass tennis court event at the Dainfern Residential Estate.

Participants were dressed for the occasion in classic Wimbledon all white-attire, while champagne, strawberries and cream were served.

The Tennis Inc and Dainfern team worked around the clock to make the event a memorable one, ensuring it accommodated players of different ages. The football field was quickly converted into a mini Wimbledon tournament, complete with four high-quality grass courts for a round-robin tournament.

With the wind blowing on the day, players found it hard to adapt to the conditions at the beginning of play. However, Wimbledon Purple side Francois Malan and Derrick van der Peet opened their tournament with a convincing 9–0 victory against Wimbledon Green opponents. Playing on grass instead of hard court proved to be exciting, with the tennis ball taking unpredictable bounces. Players were then forced to get lower and take a greater variety of shots.

After a long day of play, Dolf Buys and Sofi Mitrani have crowned the winners of the Wimbledon Green category while Francois Malan and Derrick van der Peet emerged victorious in the Purple Wimbledon.

Winners walked away with loads of prizes including Babolat sportswear and other goodies. Tennis Inc member Gaynor Harris was impressed with the turnout, “We are really happy with how the tournament went and this is a rare opportunity to get people play on grass, it just creates that Wimbledon environment.”

Harris also revealed that this year’s tournament consisted only of Bryanston Sports Club members. “They’re one of the strongest in South Africa, so we had very good tennis displayed and we definitely looking to expand in the future and have about nine or 12 grass courts.”
