Every family has its secrets

PAULSHOF – It was one part laughter to one part heartache for audiences attending Family Secrets at the Pieter Tourien Theatre at Montecasino.

It was a mix of humour and heartbreak, learned lessons and simple truths as Family Secrets came to the stage at Montecasino.

The Pieter Tourien Theatre at Montecasino played host to the English language premiere of the play, which ran from 14 until 30 June in Johannesburg and tells a moving family story against the backdrop of beautiful Italy.

Grazia (played by Dorothy Ann Gould) is a feisty and combative mother who spends her days watching soap operas in peace until her son Adamo (Beaulieu College graduate Sven Ruygrok), a struggling writer, moves back into the family home.

Rene Stevenson and Dominique Hafner smile outside the theatre where Family Secrets was being performed. “I’m enjoying the play,” Stevenson told the Fourways Review. “It’s not quite the comedy I was expecting, it’s a bit more serious but I’m still enjoying it.” Photo: Robyn Kirk

At times tense, at times hilarious, these two, flawed individuals have some hard conversations and meaningful moments on the road to understanding family.

The play now heads to Cape Town, where it will run at the Theatre on the Bay until 13 July this year.
