Update: Accused hammer attacker convicted

FOURWAYS – The suspect has been convicted and will be sentenced at the Randburg Magistrates' Court next year January.

MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun said in a Twitter post that he was informed on Thursday (28 November) evening by the victim that the taxi driver was convicted yesterday (28 November) at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.

“He will be sentenced on 23 January 2020,” said Sun.

Douglasdale police have arrested a person accused of attacking a motorist in Fourways on William Nicol Road with a hammer. The incident reported by the Fourways Review had a video of a minibus taxi driver attacking a motorist with what looked like a hammer after the motorist recorded allegedly unlawful driving acts by the taxi driver.

Provincial spokesperson Captian Kay Mkhubele confirmed that a suspect had been arrested, “Police arrested a suspect of the hammer case, he has been on the run since last week. The suspect is a 36-year-old male, the taxi driver assaulted a 67-year-old man with a hammer along William Nicol Drive.”

The suspect has been charged with assault and malicious damage to property. He is expected to appear at Randburg Magistrates’ Court on assault charges.

A video showing an attack between a minibus taxi driver and a motorist in Fourways on William Nicol Drive has been widely circulated online.

According to a Facebook post by Future City Fourways, the incident happened on the afternoon of 3 July. The motorist reportedly said he witnessed a number of unlawful driving acts by the taxi driver including driving through two red traffic lights.

The motorist wanted to capture what he was witnessing and took a picture of the driver who then threatened him and threw what appeared to be a hammer at him.

The post read, “He then jumped out of his taxi with another hammer and ran to my car smashing my passenger window, hitting my right hand as I tried to defend myself, he then proceeded to run around the car smashing the vehicle as he went, causing thousands of rands damage.”

A spokesperson for the Metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said he was unaware of the incident but said it is an assault case and should be opened with the local police.

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said they are unaware of the incident.
