A sweet stand against poverty

FOURWAYS – The fight against poverty got some sweet support when Crawford Preparatory Fourways supported Jaci Tibbit and the RoleModels Foundation by joining the Poverty Sucks campaign.

Everyone can agree that poverty sucks, but we do not often think of sucking back.

On 31 May Jaci Tibbit, perhaps best known to Fourways readers as Mrs. Johannesburg 2016, visited the children at Crawford Preparatory Fourways as part of the Poverty Sucks campaign.

The school decided to purchase about 450 specially made suckers at R10 each for the children who attend the school, with all funds going to the Role Models Foundation to be used to support communities in need across the country.

Tibbit addressed the children and thanked them for making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate before they got to tuck into their sweet treats.

“The Poverty Sucks campaign has been going from the beginning of 2018,” she said.

“Quite a few schools have gotten involved across South Africa, and I have personally visited over 30 schools and corporates who have supported it since October of last year.”

The money collected from the campaign goes directly to the Role Models Foundation, who use the funds to create and distribute food packs for the hungry, as well as to support underprivileged schools around the county.

The campaign is just the latest way the school has encouraged its children to help the less fortunate. Crawford Preparatory Fourways is also currently collecting blankets and dry foods to also be given away.

The principal of the school Ian Rothman explained, “I want my children to get involved with helping others.

“It’s easy to give donations, but it is difficult to understand the context behind the charity. The kids always respond positively, and we as a community have come to understand the needs that are out there.

“My children and parent body are amazing, and we’re always happy to support the work that Jaci [Tibbit] does as she really makes a difference in the world.”

Tibbit is also currently competing in Mrs. African United Continent 2020 pageant, in which she is a finalist.
