Sandton to celebrate Youth Day

SANDTON – The event will also host the launch of the police station's Youth Desk.

Members of the Sandton Police Station are hard at work to finalise their Youth Day Summit and launch the Youth Desk at the station.

The event, which will be hosted at the Sandton Seventh-day Adventist Church, will bring together over 500 learners from Sandton schools.

Youth Day marks the 1976 Soweto Uprising when students protested against the Bantu Education Act. The Sandton Police Station hopes that through the event, young people will have the opportunity to voice issues they experience in their communities.

On the day, officers will address crimes affecting the youth, substance abuse, protective behaviour programmes and the role of youth in fighting crime.

Numerous city departments, religious organisations, businesses, and non-profit organisations have gotten involved to show their support for the event. The Youth Day Summit will take place from 9am to 2pm on 16 June.

The event will also mark the launch of the Youth Desk at the Sandton Police Station, which aims to improve communication between young people and the police. The Youth Desk initiative, which was created by the Department of Community Safety, welcomes people from the ages of 18 to 35 to address crime in their community through various projects.

Members of the Youth Desk work with Sandton police, Sandton Community Policing Forum, the Department of Community Safety and municipal governments to identify youth safety challenges, and to develop and implement relevant projects to address these challenges. The youth head up these projects and ensure that they are relevant to the community’s needs.

The Youth Desk focuses on programmes geared toward education and skills development, alcohol and drug abuse, peer pressure, and gangsterism, among others.

For more information about the Youth Desk, contact Constable Ramafamba on 011 722 4279 or 071 676 1116.
