St Peter’s College hosts Winter Sports Festival

SUNNINGHILL – Hockey, netball, rugby and other winter sports athletes recently got to show off their stuff at the St Peter's College 15th annual Winter Sports Festival.

On 11 May, St Peter’s College held a Junior Winter Sports Festival, which saw 10 schools participating in hockey, netball and rugby.

The festival began 15 years ago with the aim of supporting the development of winter sports and to provide much-needed competition for the junior school teams.

The festival also presents an opportunity for the first team derby between St Peter’s College and Roosevelt High School rugby first teams.

“I am extremely satisfied with the attitude and desire that was shown by all our teams during the junior festival. The input of players, coaches, staff, and parents culminated in a wonderful day of sport.

I am looking forward to the derby day and league fixtures ahead,” said Dave Short, St Peter’s College head of sport.

Junior hockey girls and boys flooded the St Peter’s College Astroturf as well as their Mandela and Luthuli fields. There was fierce competition among the teams as shown in the marginal differences in the results where the leading teams only won by four points or less on average.

Eight netball teams battled it out, showing great talent and skills among the junior players. St Peter’s College teams won five out of eight games throughout the age categories.

Christelle van Schalkwyk,  netball manager concluded, “I am very happy with the teams’ results although we took defeat in some other games. The juniors are making good progress on their technical skills and one cannot help but be excited about the future of netball.”
