Team Darth Vaderlicious wins cooking competition

BRYANSTON – A group of 1st Bryanston Cubs cooked up a storm recently when they won the cub cooking competition by preparing the greatest meal over an open fire.

Budding cooks had the chance to impress the judges recently when they prepared a meal over open flames.

Cubs from the Sandton District participated in a cooking competition, held at Delta Park on 4 May. The theme for the event was ‘May the fourth be with you’ to coincide with this special date (Star Wars Day) and was inspired by the famous Star Wars movie franchise. A total of 18 teams from the 1st Bryanston, 1st Fourways, 1st Morningside, 1st Parkmore and 1st Peter Place Cub Packs participated.

One of the eagerly anticipated events on the District’s calendar, the Cub Cooking Compo is held every second year. Teams were challenged to prepare a meal over an open fire, including a dessert of their choice. Similar to the MasterChef competition seen on television, the ingredients for the main course were only provided to each team on the day, adding to the mystery and suspense.

Teams also had to prepare their own special menu, decorate their table according to their chosen theme, and then plate their culinary delight to impress the panel of judges.

Bronwyn Peake, the event organiser and judge on the day, said, “[I am] very impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the Cubs.”

Team ‘Darth Vaderlicious’ from the 1st Bryanston Saturday Cub Pack were the overall winners of the competition. However, the main aim of the day according to Peake was to get the children outdoors and having fun together. Perhaps some may pursue a career in catering or the hospitality industry one day as a result of this experience.

Cubs is the junior branch of the Scout Movement and is targeted at children in the seven to 11-year age group. Membership is open to both boys and girls.
