Reddam House Helderfontein wins the second round of the High School Book Quiz Night

FOURWAYS – Four local schools battled it out at the High School Quiz Night at Skoobs for their spot at the quarter-finals in September.

The second evening of the High School Book Quiz: Bragging Writes took place on Friday, 15 March at Skoobs, Montecasino.

Returning contenders from the first quiz last month Reddam House Helderfontein, Steyn City College and Fourways High School faced newcomers Brescia House School with each team comprised of learners from Grade 8 onwards.

Kirsten Rolsten, store manager of Skoobs and quizmaster, kicked off the evening as she welcomed the parents that had come out to support their children.

At the first Bragging Writes night in February Rolsten said, “The reason we started this quiz is because we don’t think people read enough, we don’t think children read enough.

“People spend a lot of time on their phones and tablets so we want to promote literacy to the high schools. So that’s why you’re here.” The quiz night is adjudicated by Read Educational Trust which operates primarily as an educator development agency in the fields of language, literacy and communication.

The teams were bursting with energy as Rolsten put on the quizmaster’s hat and kicked off the evening with literary and film-based questions. Huddled together through each round, quietly discussing their answers, the teams also displayed a great sense of sportsmanship as they bid each other good luck for each round with genuine wishes.

The end of the evening Reddam House Helderfontein took first place with 50 points, Brescia House School took second with 45.5 points, Fourways High School took third with 36.5 points and Steyn City took fourth with 31 points.

Reddam House Helderfontein moved straight to the quarter-finals in September, along with last month’s winner, HeronBridge College.

The quiz will be spread out in a series of rounds before the finals in December.

Participants are also encouraged to bring along a book they would like to donate in order to support the work of Reading.
