Sunninghill steps out for a local shavathon

SUNNINGHILL – Community members stepped out in their numbers to support the fight against cancer at a recent shavathon.

Those who are suffering from cancer, have beaten it or know somebody who has encountered this disease can take some comfort in knowing that Johannesburg residents are keen to do their part in the fight against cancer.

A Cansa Shavathon, hosted by Chilli Lane Shopping Centre on 2 March, saw the Sunninghill and surrounding community step out in their numbers to spend the morning either shaving or spray painting their hair in support.

Tumelo Lethaku, a member of the Unilever field sales team and volunteer as the floor manager at the shavathon said, “We had a really good response today and it really shows that South Africans do support those living with cancer as well as those who have survived the disease.

“We really appreciate the turnout we saw and it’s been so special to be here, to be a part of this.

“We’re looking forward to participating again next time.”

This Cansa event was not only a shavathon as other organisations were invited to set up their own stands including the South African National Blood Service. So if you weren’t keen to do anything with your hair, you were still able to do your part for others by donating blood.

Woodrock Animal Rescue; Virgin Active, which hosted a boot camp to promote fitness; and MixFM which broadcasted live from the event, were also part of the initiative to spread awareness.

Kim Dawson, marketing manager for the centre said they hoped to make the event an annual one with this being the first.

One supporter, Luisa Fernandes, had her hair sprayed in memory of her father. “My dad passed away in 2010 after a long battle with cancer so I’ve chosen blue for my hair today because that was his colour, the colour of his favourite soccer team, FC Porto.”

Were you not able to make it to the shavathon? Don’t worry, you can head over to Montecasino on 8, 9 and 10 March for another Cansa Shavathon where you’ll also have the chance to meet the Fourways Review team who will be participating as part of our Caxton Cares initiative.
