Has your social grant ever lapsed or been suspended? Here is what you need to know

JOHANNESBURG – The recent changes of social grants payments have caused confusion for some beneficiaries.

The recent changes of social grants payment and closing of some cash pay points have resulted in some beneficiaries confused and surprised with the changes.

Spokesperson for the South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) Senzen Ngubeni, said in coordination with the South African Post Office they have advised beneficiaries to consider utilising the Post Office, ATMs or merchants to withdraw social grant payments.

If and when your social grant is suspended or lapses, Sassa will notify beneficiaries for a review process for each and every social grant. In an event where the beneficiaries do not honour the review date, it will result in a lapsed or suspended social grant after a period of 90 days no show.

Some of the factors which may result in the suspension or lapsing of a grant:

  • Changes in circumstances it can either be financial or medical progress
  • Outcome of a review on the status of the beneficiary
  • Misrepresentation
  • Failure to cooperate when a grant is reviewed
  • Death of a beneficiary
  • Admission to a state institution
  • If the grant is not claimed for a period of three months, this will affect those who are yet to change to the new Sassa card
  • If you cease to be a refugee
  • If the child for whom the grant is received turns 18 years old.
