Chartwell Stables hosts training show before showjumping season

CHARTWELL – Local riders show their skill during a showjumping training show at Chartwell Stables.

A sensational training show at Chartwell Stables has got everyone in the mood for another year of showjumping.

Cheers rang out at the yard on a warm but cloudy 27 January, as family, friends and fellow riders shouted support after every jump was cleared.

Riders showed excellent technique in their jumping as well as control of their horses while navigating the course. Once or twice when a rider completed the course at express pace, it drew even louder cheers from the crowd and prompted riders after them to attempt an even faster time.

Kelly Pretorius, an instructor at the yard, said riders ranged from the age of four to 60 cleared jumps between 30 and 90cm at the training show.

“The purpose of the show was to get everyone’s eye in before the season starts, and give those who do not compete [in formal shows] the opportunity to compete against their peers,” she said.

“We are very pleased with how the riders did on the wet ground [after rain the night before] and this was a good last show before the school season starts.”

Pretorius said training shows such as this one are held every six weeks at Chartwell Stables. Furthermore, the yard will also host pony camps and fun days over the next few weekends before the annual Easter egg hunt, which is done on horseback over the Easter weekend.

She said the yard looked forward to another year of excellent showjumping and helping its riders achieve their full potential.
