These tips will help you avoid being a housebreaking victim

PAULSHOF – Follow these tips in order not to fall prey to these crimes.

Residents are urged to be mindful of their security at home during the festive season, which warning comes from the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, Captain Granville Meyer.

“If an intruder is able to get inside your home it is very important to remain calm and think ahead of your intruder. Your safety, as well as your family’s, is very important. You should follow these tips in order to protect you and your family during the festive season,” Meyer said.

He shared that when approached by an intruder you should:

• Cooperate with the invader(s). This may help calm the criminals and reduce the likelihood of violence. “No matter how discomforting it is to lose your valuables, do not risk your life.”

• Avoid looking the intruder(s) in the eye. “If a criminal feels you can identify him, he may react violently.”

• If you own a firearm, you may want to keep it hidden in your master bathroom.

• “Victims of home invasions are most often in the master bathroom.”

• Establish a code word or phrase with a friend who regularly calls you on the telephone. “Should this person call during a home invasion, you could claim that you’re expecting an important phone call and that not answering would arouse suspicion.”
