Five not-so-obvious signs the festive season is in full swing

JOBURG – Five unlikely signs that indicate Joburg’s holiday season is in full effect.

Going into the festive season, you might feel different vibes in the air and notice a number of changes around you that indicate that the holiday season is slowly getting into full effect.

Just like there are sure sings of seasonal changes during the year, there are also unlikely and not-so-obvious signs of the changes. For instance, malls getting packed to the walls by shoppers and Christmas decorations are a sure-fire sign that the festive season is settling in while, on the other end, decreased numbers of people visiting the city is a subtle sign.

Check out these five subtle signs that show the festive season is in full swing:

  1. You hear the same songs over and over wherever you go. This year, it seems like King Monada’s Malwedhe has taken its residency as the song that will be in heavy rotation this festive season.

  1. The city is less crowded and there seems to be more space to walk around as a lot of people have gone into the suburbs, rural areas or out somewhere exotic on much-deserved vacations.

  1. The Home Alone and Santa Clause franchises seem to be the only movies playing on TV, and even though you have watched these movies countless times, you still settle on the channel and indulge in them.

  1. You tend to see a lot of custard and jelly boxes around in trash cans. Ultra Mel, the ultimate Christmas delicacy, has taken precedence as the go-to dessert. We aren’t complaining though.

  1. Last but not least, every family has stocked up on Choice Assorted Biscuits – the all-in-one festive snack attack. You either see the boxes displayed in store fronts or hidden in cupboards, ready to be opened only on Christmas Day.
