#Fourways: Know the City’s fireworks safety regulations and by-laws

SUNNINGHILL – Community members took to social media to complain about the fireworks last night, 7 November. Here's what you need to know about the by-laws ...

Yesterday, 7 November, fireworks could be heard and seen in and around the Fourways area. This was in celebration of Diwali, the Hindu celebration that took place from 6 and 7 November with the Gujarati New Year celebrated today on 8 November.

This five-day celebration, known as the festival of lights, stretches back more than 2 500 years and is the most auspicious date on the Hindu calendar.

Residents were urged to be respectful of those observing the celebration and those not, while also exercising caution and being sensitive to neighbours, babies, students, the sick, elderly and animals.

The MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, wished to extend peace and prosperity to those celebrating but also reminded all residents of the by-laws, one of which state that fireworks can only be set off between 7pm and 10pm.

Non-adherence to this law could result in a R5oo fine.

Igniting fireworks near animals, hospitals or old age homes could result in fines up to R1 000.
