Fourways children cook for the underprivileged

FOURWAYS – The 1st Fourways Cubs recently cooked up a storm and donated their hard work to other children in need.

A general sentiment at the latest outing of the 1st Fourways Cub pack to the Miele Centre in Bryanston was, ‘I did not know cooking could be so much fun!’

The Cubs learned how to handle food correctly in the kitchen as well as how to prepare and appreciate a nutritious meal.

Organised by Jean Veitch from Fun-a-Galore, the 1st Fourways Cubs spent three hours of community service cooking a delicious stew, as well as biscuits, which was then donated to Kids Haven, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) supporting homeless children in Johannesburg.

“In South Africa, we are taught the importance of giving back from a young age and Fun-a-Galore provides the opportunity for these eight to 12-year-olds to give back to less fortunate children while learning a little about the real challenges they often face. Food is one of our basic human needs and yet so many take it for granted while so many go without,” said Veitch.

“Doing a good turn to others is one of the key values of Scouts South Africa,” said Melanie Dawes, pack leader of the 1st Fourways Cubs.

“So to combine doing good with learning something valuable and having fun is a wonderful experience for our Cubs.”

The Miele kitchen is closing for renovation and Fun-a-Galore is looking for a new venue to conduct these heart-warming team builds, supporting worthy NGOs from within the wider Sandton community.
