PIC: Come on drivers, have a heart for hedgehogs
FOURWAYS – As the warmer weather arrives, motorists driving at night are urged to watch out and avoid hitting South African hedgehogs who are becoming active again after hibernation
As the weather gets warmer, Southern African hedgehogs are coming out of hibernation, establishing territories and travelling quite far in search of food.
As the animals are nocturnal, motorists are urged to be vigilant at night when the hedgehogs may be travelling along the roads – their natural defence is to roll up into a ball, not to run away, so please drive slowly and watch out for dark shapes on the road.
