Chacma baboon receives care at Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is known for conducting numerous rehabilitation projects and recently they gave a little chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) called Kira a checkup and facilitated her transfer.

According to the hospital’s wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Nicci Wright the little baboon was found alone on a farm in the Western Cape and was then taken to the Karoo SPCA.

“As there are no facilities in the region to rehabilitate and release primates, she was flown to Gauteng.”

Wright explained that upon arrival at their hospital, they ensured that the little baboon was in good physical health – albeit a little underweight and dehydrated. “She has been transferred to a primate specialist rehabilitation facility where she will be integrated with other baboon orphans. The end goal is to release so they can live in the wild as a fully functioning baboon troop.”

She highlighted that the key to protecting the wildlife is in collaborating and working with one another. “Special thanks goes to the rescuer of Kira, the Karoo SPCA, Bidair Cargo as well as the NSPCA for collaborating with us to ensure she received the treatment and rehabilitation process she needs.”
