Two silvers and a bronze earned at international karate competition

KYALAMI – The Shotokan-ZA national team has returned from the recent 7th WUKF World Karate Championships with three medals.

The Shotokan-ZA National Team set out on 10 June to represent South Africa in Dundee, Scotland at the 7th World Union of Karate-Do Federation (WUKF) World Karate Championships and have returned successfully.

The competition was huge, with 41 countries, 85 federations, 2 281 participants, 223 coaches and 108 referees registered and taking part in the championships. Despite this been the first time the team had competed in this competition, three South African athletes returned with a medal in hand.

  • Walner Strydom won a silver medal in the category, Kata Shotokan and Goju Ryu, Male, Mini Cadets, White to Orange, 13 to 14 Years
  • Nianza Tshabalala won a silver medal in the category, Kata Adapted, Learning Disabilities, Female, Over 15 Years
  • Thomas Parry won a bronze medal in the category, Kumite Shobu Ippon, Male, Cadets, All Belts, 15 to 17 Years, Open Weight.

“I am very happy with the team’s overall performance and very proud of each and every member. I would also like to thank the two national coaches, Mari du Preez and Dél-Mari van Zyl, for all their hard work in preparing the team,” said Shotokan-ZA Federation president, Sensei Elmarie van Zyl. “Our results show that we are on the right track!”
