A secretary bird (sagittarius serpentarius) which has made its home at OR Tambo International Airport is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in Glenferness.

The hospital’s wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Nicci Wright said, “The airport’s senior wildlife officer, Melisa Hofman noticed a behavioural change in the bird as he started not being scared when people approached him, so she then contacted our hospital. Our specialist, Penny Morkel as well as another specialist went to the airport and managed to catch the bird.”

Wright explained that an examination revealed that a swelling was found on the bird’s foot which was causing him some pain and discomfort. “Radiographs revealed no bony changes, and Dr Karin Lourens aspirated some of the fluid from the swelling and this was sent away for culture and antibiogram determination at Idexx Laboratory.”

She added that the tests would determine the type of bacteria responsible for the infection and then the correct antibiotic could be administered.

“The bird will stay with us until the infection has cleared. A telemetry unit will be fitted so that his movements can be properly monitored, post-release. We treat indigenous wildlife free of charge, relying on the community for donations and support.”
