The Lipizzaners learn Afrikaans

For the first time in the South African Lipizzaner’s decades-long history, they put on a performance with Afrikaans commentary.

For the first time in its 70-year history, the South African Lipizzaners put on a performance with commentary entirely in Afrikaans.

The show was hosted on 20 May and formed part of the weekly performance on Sunday morning from 10:30am, and saw the famous white stallions showing off their moves as riders put them through their paces in the indoor arena.

“It’s a request that we get often,” said Karen Bohme, one of the riders who performed on the day.

”People often ask if we ever have shows done in Afrikaans, and we’ve had to tell them no. So this was a first for us, and hopefully, the word will spread.”

Although the next Afrikaans performance has not been scheduled yet, those interested in watching the Lippizzaners perform again can catch their free show at Blue Hill Equestrian Centre on 2 June (from 10am) or their Father’s Day performance on 17 June.
