Schools recognised at INMED Health in Action awards

NORTH RIDING – The awards recognise excellence and best practices among primary schools that participate in the Health in Action programme to improve the health, nutrition and well-being of children.

Schools in Diepsloot and Cosmo City were among the learning institutions recognised at the INMED Health in Action awards.

An initiative in partnership with Mondelez International Foundation, the awards recognise excellence and best practices among primary schools that participate in the Health in Action programme to improve the health, nutrition and well-being of children.

Held at the North Haven Country Estate in North Riding, the event was attended by chief education specialist of the Department of Basic Education, Mummy Maduna, and Mondelez and Vuma Reputation Management representatives.

Known as the ‘mother of school gardens’, Maduna said, “Healthy living in schools should be set as a priority as it is important for children to eat nutritious meals.

“The first and last meals are mostly at home and the school nutrient meals supplied at schools should support the meals given at home, so it is important for parents to know the healthy meals to provide for their children.”

She added that there was a government programme to encourage the planting of food gardens at schools.

“Gardens in schools are meant for education and not to produce food, but if you are doing them correctly and have the right education, most definitely you will enjoy the harvest.”

This year’s winner for the Health in Action programme was Tshepana Primary School from Orange Farm who received an obstacle course worth R80 000 for their outdoor play yard.
