Convicted murderer wants to appeal sentence and conviction

JOBURG – 27-year-old man to appeal his 20-year sentence.

An Alex man is appealing his 20-year sentence and guilty conviction.

In September 2016, the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court found George Mondlana guilty of fatally shooting an acquaintance in 2014.

It is understood that Mondlana shot the deceased during a quarrel between the two of them on 2nd Avenue in Alexandra. After committing the crime, he disappeared and was arrested following an intense police search that went on for four months.

Mondlana pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him, but the court found him guilty.

He was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for the murder and another 30 years for the possession and use of an illegal firearm. The sentences are running concurrently and were commuted to a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment.

He will be back at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 11 June for his lawyer to be supplied with transcripts of the trial.
