State given final postponement in case against alleged mall robberies syndicate
JOBURG – The state has been given a final chance to get its house in order in a case against six men accused of being part of a syndicate that has been engaged in a spate of robberies at malls across Gauteng, specifically targeting cell phone shops.
The state has been given a final opportunity to complete investigations in the case against six men accused of having conspired to commit a robbery at a cell phone store at Fourways Mall.
The six, Nkosinathi Masoa, Raymond Sibanyoni, Nelson Malesa, Lethabo Sheshingwani, Thokozani Sibanda and Sphiwe Madonsela were arrested in September last year, following a joint intelligence-driven operation which foiled the alleged robbery.
They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of prohibited firearms.
The state is also saying more charges will be put against the accused persons as they have been positively linked to being part of a syndicate that has been involved in a spate of robberies across Gauteng.
During the brief appearance at Randburg Magistrates’ Court, the state prosecutor, Elias Ratlou told the court that the state still needs time to complete investigations.
The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Johannes Last told the court that he was still awaiting forensic results sent for analysis. Last said he expects to receive the results soon.
Sadiki did grant the state the postponement and said he will not entertain any further excuses by the state. The magistrate said he will make a harsh decision should state not have its house in order at the next appearance. The matter has been remanded to 3 May at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.
