Helping owls one piece of plastic at a time

CROWTHORNE – The Beaulieu Prep Nursery School children have come up with a novel way in which to help out Owl Rescue in Hartbeespoort.

With the amount of plastic landing up in our seas and oceans, Beaulieu Prep Nursery School (Bens) looked for ideas on how they could make a difference. They were informed that the Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort has a huge initiative, collecting plastic.

The plastic is collected from numerous outlets, such as schools and the plastic bottles are then shredded into small pieces. The shredded plastic is melted and put through a hydraulic press. This, in turn, is moulded to use as owl houses, bat houses and their latest invention, bee houses.

Their initiative will be needing 200 tons of plastic this year and this is where the Bens community has stepped in to help make the Owl Rescue Centre meet its requirements.

As a reminder to recycle, Bobby Bain, head of the nursery school, has arranged for a bright green box at the entrance of the nursery school. Families fill this box daily to the delight of the Owl Rescue Centre.

The school’s social responsibility committee, Isinkwa (bread), supports this initiative and with the help of the Engen garage at Crowthorne, has arranged a free ice cream voucher for each pupil who brings five or more clean plastic items. Clean plastic items exclude all plastic bags or thin clingwrap.

Bain is so impressed with the amount of plastic the nursery school has already collected. This project will be ongoing as we are often reminded of the dangers lurking in our oceans.
