The head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane encouraged community members to practice safety measures when at home.
This came after a recent patrol in the area conducted by the police as they noticed that some community members left their gates open instead of locking them.
“Residents also leave their security gates open and leave their vehicles parked outside their yard, unlocked. Some of the windows to their homes were left open and the house door was left unlocked,” Tshetlhane said.
She advised the community to consider the following tips:
q Always lock your door even when you are at home
q Main doors should be fitted with strong locks
q Ask neighbours to keep an eye on your premises when you're not at home
q Always insist on seeing the identification cards of callers who claim to be government officials
q Never open doors to strangers
q Report any suspicious characters to the police.
“Help us to make the area safe, as we believe that together we can combat crime and if you do not buy stolen goods you can help stop crime,” Tshetlhane concluded.
