Ward councillor swims eighth Midmar

FOURWAYS – Ward 93 councillor, Candice James appreciates the value of life at the Midmar Mile.

Ward 93 councillor, Candice James swam her eighth Midmar Mile on 10 February, and once again she brought the whole family with.

The James clan has done a whopping 26 Midmar Miles between them, although Morgan (10) completed her first.

The family of six participated in the ‘family event’, which saw 2 000 swimmers complete the world’s largest open water swim, in Midmar Dam, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Personally, it was my toughest Midmar,” said James.

“There was a very strong wind which created large waves. It’s the first time I have been kicked, scratched and even swam over. All our times were worse than our previous years.”

Despite this, James appreciated the ability to swim the Midmar Mile, as she opted to swim in memory of her friend, Tanya Nyce, who passed away in January.

“I really enjoyed being able to swim and feel the water, seeing the birds flying over and even watching the cars and buses move up and down on the road. It was a moment for me to appreciate life.”

James added that even though it was her youngest daughter, Morgan’s, first Midmar Mile, she got bored at one point and swam like a dolphin to the end.

The ward councillor promised the family would be back at Midmar Dam next year, and said the younger members hope to beat their best times.

“As usual [I did not train] enough and age is catching up quickly. I think for next year I need to start sooner.” s
