The R511 is a challenge in itself

The road closure of the alternative route on the R511 between Fourways and Diepsloot refers.

The public has been informed that the Riversands Road has been temporarily closed due to the 947 Cycle Challenge Race for the period 6 to 19 November.

In light of the closure of this road, drivers have had to make use of the incomplete R511 which was supposed to have been completed by October this year. It is necessary to highlight the dangers associated with the use of this road and I would like to bring the following to your attention:

  • The R511 is not currently in a state to handle the traffic volumes because it is, in essence, a gravel road and stopping distances are severely reduced as a result thereof. This is highly dangerous to all road users
  • The gravel road significantly reduces visibility because of the dust element associated with the sheer volumes of traffic making use of it
  • Taxis are using any lanes (of which there are currently no road markings) and methods to overtake ‘slow’ traffic that is trying to obey the 40km/h speed limit (as is the law on gravel roads in South Africa).

This situation is clearly unacceptable and in need of the organisers of the 947 Cycle Challenge Race’s urgent and undivided attention to avoid any possible loss of life.
