Ahead of the festive season, community members are urged to be vigilant when out shopping at shopping centres or malls.

According to the Douglasdale Police Station’s communications officer, Captain Mpho Kgasoane, car jamming at shopping centres or mall is still on the rise and community members need to be cautious when out shopping.

“The festive season is a wonderful time for community members as it is a time where people plan to spoil their loved ones, however, community members are advised to always practise caution and vigilance when out and about this festive season,” Kgasoane said.

Kgasoane provided safety tips to use to avoid becoming a victim of car jamming:

  • Park your car in a place where there is visible security video surveillance
  • Make sure that you physically check that your windows and doors are locked before you leave your vehicle
  • Double check if your car is securely locked, do not just activate your car alarm and walk away
  • Do not leave valuables in your car visible to criminals, make sure all valuable items are safely hidden
  • If you plan to leave your car unattended, make sure you park in a busy public space
  • When you park your vehicle in your yard make sure that it is securely locked.

“Community members need to immediately report any sort of crime to the police station as well as work hand in hand with the police to fight crime.”
