PWC Cycle Park in Fourways hosts Pedal Power Memorial Ride
FOURWAYS – In memory of cyclists who paid the ultimate price on South African roads, PWC Cycle Park, Paddle Power and cyclists from all over Johannesburg North showed their respect in an honorary memorial cycle ride.
The PWC Cycle Park in Fourways hosted the Pedal Power Memorial Ride on 22 July to commemorate cyclists who have passed away on South African Roads. The ride was also dedicated to raising awareness among drivers and encouraging them to keep a safe driving distance of a minimum of one metre from cyclists on the roads.
After a brief safety talk and route briefing, Robert Vogal from Pedal Power said, “It’s up to all of us as individuals to keep the roads safe, laws won’t do it all for us, it’s up to the community to try and make a difference on the roads.
“300 cyclist fatalities happened in 2016 and while we are on this ride, let’s think about those who have passed on.”
The cyclist bowed their heads in a moment of memorial silence and as a token of remembrance; respect and appreciation for fellow riders, got onto their bikes and made their way to Mandela Square and back to the PWC Cycle Park.
Some had to get off their bikes to catch their breath and some gave each other a push along the way, either way, everyone made it back safely.
Paulshof cyclist wins toughest one-day race
With Emergency Services and police in front, at their flanks and at the heels of the riders, there was no reason to fear. All the riders wore bright yellow riding gear with the slogans ‘Stay wider off the rider’ and ‘Please share the roads’.
Vusi Lukhele, a cyclist, said he and his team entered because they feel like victims on South African roads. “We want to bring awareness to the next level to create mutual respect between all road users,” said Lukhele.
