Community concerned about fire safety in Lonehill

FOURWAYS – While residents are unhappy about the state of the fire department in Lonehill, MMC Michael Sun explains the current affairs.

Residents are fuming after they discovered on 11 June during a house fire that the Lonehill Fire Department is in dire need of a working fire engine.

Diepsloot Fire Station responded to the call at the Monte Pollino complex in Beverley Extension 24. The fire was extinguished in time. In spite of the fact that the roof of the house collapsed, no fatalities were reported.

Member of Mayoral Committee Michael Sun explains current state of fire stations.

Sun urged residents to be patient and explained that older engines can then be re-manufactured and reconditioned as backup vehicles.

Future City Fourways chairperson Jean Berdou explained that the community is concerned about safety and rightly so. However, with constraints and the state of the emergency services because of previous neglect and a limited budget, repairs and processes take longer.

Jean Berdou understands the community’s frustration.

“Future City Fourways insists that the matter of the emergency services in Lonehill be addressed as quickly as possible,” said Berdou.

Sun explained, “We have identified a replacement vehicle until the Lonehill engine is repaired. We request the community’s cooperation and understanding of the current situation as resources play a massive role and the resources are very limited.”

Sun emphasised that he will never just leave the community to fend for themselves. The community is his number one priority.
