Salvation Army needs your help this winter

JOBURG – The Salvation Army requests donations in order to help the poor and the homeless this winter.

Winter has arrived in South Africa and with it comes an appeal from The Salvation Army for assistance in providing help to those most badly affected by the cold, the homeless and poor.

Every year, The Salvation Army is called on to dispense blankets, clothing and food to an increasing number of people in need of assistance.

The public relations secretary for the Southern Africa region, Major Carin Holmes said, “For many of us, winter is little more than an inconvenience as we gratefully switch on our heaters, take out our warm clothes, and prepare hearty, warming food.”

“But for the many homeless and poor among us, winter can literally be a dour battle of survival as the biting cold rips into their meagre resources. We are experiencing an increasing number of people turning to us for help. The Salvation Army relies heavily on the generosity of the public to be able to do so.”

According to Holmes, 900 blankets were received by The Salvation Army recently from an individual donor and are already being distributed to the needy in Johannesburg.

“Giving help can be as simple and easy as sending an SMS message to our helpline, 42290, with the word ‘Winterhelp’ in the SMS. The cost of the SMS is only R30. The vast majority of which we receive goes towards assisting the needy,” Holmes concluded.

Details: Companies wishing to contribute in kind are asked to contact Major Carin Holmes on 011 718 6745; 082 994 4351.
