Body of suicide victim found in backseat of car on Cedar Road

FOURWAYS – A man who allegedly committed suicide has been found in the Fourways area, police confirm.

The South African Police Service has confirmed that a man’s body was discovered just off Cedar Road in Fourways on 16 May. His identity has not been released.

According to communication Captain Walter Spencer, on behalf of the Douglasdale Police Station, the incident is believed to be a suicide.

“The body was that of an older gentleman who apparently committed suicide,” Spencer said. The Johannesburg West Police Cluster released a statement on 17 May confirming that the 65-year-old man committed suicide by inhaling chemical fumes. He went missing at around 9.00pm on 15 May and was discovered at 9.00am the next day. It is alleged that a note was found at the scene when his body was discovered.

“He had gone missing at about 9pm on the night of the 15th and had left a suicide note with his wife beforehand. He was discovered at about 9am on the morning of 16 May.”

Contrary to social media reports, the man was not found in the boot of the vehicle but rather on the backseat.

“He had some sort of chemical [inside the vehicle with him], which he released. The police have launched an inquest into the incident,” Spencer concluded.
