The newly formed and fast-growing girls’ team, Dainfern Lioness of the Dainfern Lions Football Club hosted a friendly match against neighbouring Riversands Girls School from Diepsloot.

The friendly match took place at Dainfern Golf and Country Estate and, in the club’s bid to help those less fortunate, the club handed over soccer boots to the girls of Riversands Girls School, which were donated by the club’s soccer members.

According to chairperson of Dainfern Lions Football Club, Nic Papas, the friendly match turned out to be a tremendous success. “The teams played two games, the first game went to Dainfern Lions Football Club who won 1-0 and the second win went to the visitors who won 2-1,” Papas said.

Papas added that the Lioness team comprised players ranging in age from seven to 13. “There was a great vibe on the side of the pitch with our team’s moms cheering the kids on,” he said. He added that the mothers brought snacks and cake for the players.

“I would also like to congratulate coach Kukie Modike and coach Shawn Ndlovu, and to our soccer mom, Justine Ryan for managing the team and arranging this groundbreaking event for us.”

Papas said it was awesome to watch their girls play together for the first time. “We appeal to those who still wish to join the club, be it boys or girls aged six to 16, to come along and join, it is not too late.”

Interested players can simply register on the club’s website.
