Dainfern College High School schoolchildren and their families gathered on the sports fields on 4 March for the college’s annual Earth Hour celebration.

“Earth Hour is an event we hold at Dainfern College to bring awareness about climate change, highlighting the environmental issues that our world faces,” explained Sonia Claassen, teacher and head of Round Square at Dainfern College.

Grade 0 teacher Mrs Webb and her students hike the forest.

Round Square is a global association of more than 160 schools which share unique goals that drive the personal development of schoolchildren. One of the association’s ideals is to create awareness about the environment.

Those in attendance settled down on picnic blankets to laugh, chat and snack on tasty treats. The college rock band performed and set the tone for a laid-back evening.

Sonia Classen and staff members of Dainfern College admire the Northern Lights.

“We spent a wonderful evening under the stars, challenging ourselves with environmental quizzes and spending an hour unplugging lights and power in order to create greater awareness,” said Claassen.

The college set up a green screen and photographed schoolchildren and teachers against incredible backgrounds. “The images were posted to social media as our students acknowledged the impact that they individually have on the world.

Junior preparatory schoolchildren let their imaginations run free in front of the green screen landscapes.

“We empower our Dainfern College students to be mindful and proactive in their actions to minimise their carbon footprint and to make a purposeful change to act against global warming and climate change.”
