FOURWAYS – Kiandra Eaton needs your help to get to the fencing Junior World Championships in Bulgaria this April. Read more here.

In 2014, Kiandra Eaton (16) decided to try fencing and now, two years on with 33 medals and several top rankings later, she has the opportunity to compete internationally at the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria, but needs the community’s assistance.

“Kiandra came to me a few years ago and brought up the idea of taking up a sport as an extramural,” explained Dawn, Eaton’s mother.

“Some of the more traditional sports were out because she has no ball sense, so she suggested trying fencing.”

Eaton has been training in the ‘foil’ style of fencing at the Olympia Fencing Club in Berario and is trained by the renowned Russian coach Andrei Kovrijnykh once a week and practises several hours each day to master her aim, fitness and movements.

“She has a gift for this sport. Since she started competing, she has become the top-ranked foil fencer in South Africa for both the U17 and U20 age groups, receiving her Gauteng colours in both as well,” said Dawn.

“Kiandra was actually invited to the Junior World Championships last year, in France, but her trainers decided that she hadn’t had enough practice at that time and she should wait until this year to compete.”

This year, Eaton has been invited once again to compete in the Junior World Championships for both age groups. It will be hosted in Bulgaria from 1 to 10 April. However, she may not be able to compete, as competitors who are not deemed as disadvantaged have to raise funds on their own.

Kiandra Eaton is the top-ranked foil fencer in South Africa for both the U17 and U20 age groups.

“It’s going to be expensive to cover everything. She can only compete in an internationally accredited kit from Europe [including a mask, glove for her sword arm, protective clothing and the electric equipment worn so that when contact is made during fights, the point can be electronically read and noted], all of which will cost in the region of R16 000.”We will also have to cover the international flights, accommodation and food for the 10-day event, which will cost somewhere around R80 000. I’ve tried everything I can think of [to raise what’s needed], even approaching companies about sponsorship, but because fencing is not well known here, no one has been particularly interested,” said the mom.

Eaton said, “Going to Bulgaria would mean everything to me. It was so disappointing last year, being invited to go [to the championships] but not being ready.

“But I know that this year, I’ve had enough practice and that I am ready to compete against the best fencers in the world. One day I’d love to take part in the Olympics, but if I’m ever going to do that, I need to start competing on an international level now.”
