Illegal taxi ranks in Fourways cause concern

FOURWAYS – Do you know the amount of illegal taxi ranks in the Fourways area? Read to find out.

There are a number of illegal taxi ranks operating in Fourways and this has raised concern among community members.

According to the chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, Jean Berdou, the areas that these taxi ranks operate from are not zoned for taxis.

“The three large illegal taxi ranks in the area are one at Witkoppen bridge, one at Dainfern Shopping Centre and the other one is a private taxi car service outside City Lodge near Montecasino,” Berdou said.

Berdou added that although Metro police do visit the ranks and order the taxi drivers to move, they slowly come back to the area and operate once again.

“The unfortunate thing is that law enforcement cannot always be there all the time to monitor and remove these illegal taxi ranks.

“The Metro police have limited resources and cannot be everywhere all the time. However, the policing in the area has increased dramatically and fines and impounding of vehicles has also increased substantially.”

Berdou added that the City Council together with Ward 93 councillor Candice James and Future City Fourways (FCF), were working together to have the pavement along William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen bridge cleaned up.

“This issue of the illegal taxi rank that has sprung up [on the open land] along William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen bridge is also being dealt with and an application to extend the crash barriers to prevent the [access by taxis to the open land] is in the pipeline.”
