Dainfern resident Charmaine Ellis has won the title of Mrs Globe Classic for 2017 and will go on to compete against Mrs Globe Classic contestants from around the world in the international leg of the competition, which will be hosted in Las Vegas, USA in June this year.

Ellis was crowned Mrs Globe Classic during the Mrs Africa grand finale, hosted at the Protea Hotel at the OR Tambo Airport in December last year. She was one of 40 finalists who took part in the pageant.

“It was an awesome feeling to win this title, I really wasn’t expecting it at all, as this is only the second pageant that I have ever taken part in,” Ellis (45) told Fourways Review. “I originally decided to enter because I thought it would be a great platform for me to continue my charity work for animal rescue organisations like Animal Ark and those that support abused women, which I’ve been doing for years.”

The Mrs Globe Classic is only one of the titles handed out during the Mrs Africa pageant each year, a competition that has become the premier beauty pageant for married women both in South Africa and the rest of the continent.

The Mrs Globe Classic category is reserved specifically for contestants who are 45 years old or older.

“The point [of this category] is so that I don’t have to get up on stage and be compared to a 22-year-old. There is the Mrs Globe category for younger women, and the South African winner [of that category] will be competing in China this year.

“It’s intended to send a clear message to mature women that you are not ‘over the hill’, and you can still look and feel good about yourself, no matter your age.”

But the wife and mother of a seven-year-old daughter wants it made clear that the Mrs Africa Pageant is definitely not just a beauty pageant. “A huge focus of the six-month run-up to the finale was on charity work, and all contestants were expected to engage with the public in order to create support for the Dignity Dreams charity, which is Mrs Africa’s main charity, and aims to provide sanitary pads for school girls who often go without.”

Ellis said that if she does win the upcoming Mrs Globe Classic pageant, it would be a dream come true for her. “And with that title, in the future, I would be able to approach corporations and businesses to discuss supporting charities, and not just be asking them [to give], but also be able to offer them something back.”

Charmaine Ellis needs sponsors for her entry fee for the Mrs Globe Classic pageant, the transport costs of getting to the United States in order to compete in June and for a dress that will be worn during the Evening Wear section of her upcoming pageant.
