Driver escapes from burning Uno

FOURWAYS - Car bursts into flames on William Nicol and Leslie

Paramedics rushed to the scene of a burning car on Saturday morning outside Norscot Manor in Fourways.

The driver of the vehicle was first advised by a nearby taxi driver that petrol was leaking from under the back of his Fiat Uno. The driver proceeded to pull over to the side of the road as the vehicle caught alight. ER24 paramedics assessed the driver of the vehicle, who had escaped unscathed. “Fortunately, no-one sustained any injuries,” said ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring.

Two lanes were shut in order for firefighters to extinguish the flames and the vehicle has been declared a write-off. Meiring said, “Fire services were able to extinguish the blaze after a short time.” According to the chairperson of Douglasdale Community Police Forum (CPF), Jean Berdou, the incident occurred just before 2pm and black smoke from the flames could be seen 1km away.

“The driver was very upset, he was in tears because this was his personal car but he also used it for work,” Berdou said. The driver of the vehicle is a contractor and just managed to get a ladder and some work equipment from the boot in time.
