MEC calls on owed suppliers to come forward

JOBURG – MEC wants suppliers and contractors to be paid within 30 days after rendering services or delivery of goods.

Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, has renewed calls for service providers and contractors who have outstanding payments due from the department, to come forward.

The call follows an intervention by Mamabolo to ensure that all service providers and contractors are paid within 30 days. In August, the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) assembled a specialised team dedicated to dealing with delays in the payment of its service providers and suppliers.

Addressing the Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development Mamabolo said that GDID had tightened its internal operations to ensure that the delivery of infrastructure is done without wastage and unnecessary delays. “I have instructed all our officials who deal with payments to ensure that they release invoices without any delays. Anyone who sleeps on invoices will face disciplinary action,” the MEC warned.

The GDID is the custodian of Gauteng Provincial Government immovable assets and is responsible for building infrastructure such as schools, clinics, hospitals and libraries, among others, on behalf of sister departments in the province. The sister departments are Agriculture and Rural Development; Economic Development; Education; Health; Social Development; Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation; and Roads and Transport.

Mamabolo said all queries related to nonpayment can be sent to the dedicated email address which goes directly to his desk.
