Dog recovered but problem persists

BRYANSTON – Luka has recovered after his life-changing attack, but the rottweilers are still being let out.

Readers may remember the horrifying incident of 14-year-old Italian greyhound Luka being attacked through his home’s fence on 10 July reported in, Marriage gone to the dogs, Week ending 22 July.

Luka and his owner Sean Bradley have undergone a month of pain and recovery since that life-changing day, but that long month has ended with Luka’s full recovery.

Since the initial surgery that Luka endured to graft portions of skin flaps onto the damaged side of his face, the dog has had to be taken to Bryanston Veterinary Hospital about every three days. Each time he has gone under anesthesia so that his face could be cleaned, the skin flaps that did not take could be removed, new skin flaps could be applied and his face could be restitched. Bradley said this had left his dog with a kennel cough and a subdued personality.

However, the continuous treatments have been successful as Luka’s face is now completely recovered. “Our champ, Luka is finally home after almost a month at the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital… the team there has become extended family,” said Bradley.

“No words can describe enough our appreciation to Dr Greg Irvine-Smith and the entire team for the genuine love and amazing care delivered to Luka… and all the other furry patients.”

Speaking about Vuyo Booi, the owner of the rottweilers which attacked Luka, Bradley said, “Vuyo has demonstrated compassion towards Luka and us… this includes a visit to Luka while in hospital, several follow-up calls to check on his progress, and trying to show his wife, Bulelwa the impact of her recklessness in letting the dogs out.” Bradley also said Vuyo had offered to pay Luka’s veterinary bills.

Bradley has still not heard from Bulelwa, who let out the dogs on the day of the attack, since she briefly visited Luka on 15 July.

The problem of the three rottweilers being let out has not ceased since the attack. Bradley arrived home on the evening of 21 July to hear from the community guards that Bulelwa had let the dogs out again. According to Bradley, the guards threw rocks at the dogs and chased them. Vuyo was then called out of a meeting to go and collect his dogs.

“Those dogs are going to get run over or attack someone,” said Bradley. “When is some authority going to wake up and do something about it? Next time it could be a child.”

Several unsuccessful attempts were made to contact Bulelwa.
