Diepsloot residents mete out instant justice on driver

DIEPSLOOT – Elderly man injured in his sleep as vehicle rams into his shack.

A Diepsloot motorist is fighting for his life in Tembisa Hospital after members of the public administered instant mob justice on him after he ploughed into a group of pedestrians on 8 August.

The white Mazda truck also rammed into a nearby shack, injuring an elderly man who was peacefully sleeping in his home.

A witness, who declined to be identified, explained that the speeding driver first knocked over one pedestrian along JB Marks Street which prompted members of the public to smash his car with bricks.

“The driver panicked and decided to speed away from the attack. He lost control and went on the pavement, ploughing into six pedestrians and one old man who was asleep in his shack,” said the witness.

He added that the driver was beaten in the face with a brick.

Diepsloot Police Station principal communications officer, Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the suspect was rushed to Tembisa Hospital in a serious condition after being assaulted by members of the public. “At this moment we are investigating a case of reckless driving and the driver has not yet opened assault charges,” said Mavimbela.

He also added that the police have not yet arrested or warned the driver to appear in court, as he was seriously injured and is still in hospital. “It would be inhumane to do that,” concluded Mavimbela.
