Encouraging accounting

JOBURG – Grade 9 pupils are able to compete in accounting.

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) Sage One Junior Accounting Olympiad will take place on 29 September for Grade 9 pupils who are still deciding whether or not they would like to pursue accountancy in their final school years.

This competition is separate from the Saica Sage One Accounting Olympiad, which targets pupils in Grades 11 and 12 who have chosen accountancy.

Matsoso Tsoaeli, project director for transformation and growth at Saica said, “The Junior Accounting Olympiad was created to target youngsters in Grade 9 who are deciding whether or not to continue with accounting and entice them to take the subject in their final school years.

“Our aim, thereafter, is to steer them towards studying chartered accountancy as well as other commerce-centred degrees at university. It is our hope that developing a love for the subject will, in turn, help to address South Africa’s urgent need for chartered accountants.”

According to Tsoaeli the Olympiad is about more than helping pupils to make informed career choices. “It also promotes healthy competition between them and serves as great practice in preparing them for their year-end exams as well as for the challenges that the Grade 10 accounting syllabus presents. Plus there are great prizes that the top pupils from each province stand a chance to win.”

Participating schools are selected by the district co-ordinators at each of the provincial departments of education, in conjunction with Saica. The school’s educators must then select five to 10 pupils in Grade 9 who have been identified as having accounting talent. Only 20 districts are selected to participate nationwide. The closing date for schools to submit their entries is 9 September. For more information, people are encouraged to speak to their school’s accounting teacher.

Saica is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading accounting institutes.
