Parents didn’t know about late coming

DIEPSLOOT – Parents of pupils of Sunrise Secondary School will assist the school in ensuring their children arrive early or on time for school.

The Gauteng Department of Education has finally broken its silence about the details of a meeting held between parents and education officials over the lock-out policy implemented by Sunrise High School in Diepsloot.

The meeting followed after Fourways Review exposed the locking out of late coming pupils by the school’s management after incensed pupils contacted this newspaper to register their concerns.

“The department met with parents last Sunday, 24 July, to discuss issues affecting learning and teaching at the school. One of the critical concerns raised was the late coming by Grade 12 pupils,” said acting spokesperson of the department, Oupa Bodibe, in a written statement to Fourways Review.

He said the parents accused the school of not communicating with them about their children’s late coming. “The meeting noted that many affected parents did not know about their children being regularly late for school.

“It was further noted that parents, in most instances, never received letters from the school informing them of their children’s late coming.”

Bodibe added that the supportive parents pledged to assist the school in combating this matter by monitoring their children and taking an interest in their schooling. He said that pupils were also cautioned to always adhere to the school’s code of conduct.

“The meeting emphasised that all Grade 12s should still report at the school from 7am until 4.30pm. The principal also emphasised that the school gates, as guided by policy, will remain closed for security reasons so that effective learning and teaching take place without any disruptions,” said Bodibe.
